Nespresso Orange Light After Descaling: Next, Pop or Plus?
An orange light after descaling depends on the model and the phase that stopped. Read the model name, then check the stage and the exact light before pressing another button.
Check the orange light by model and stage
Choose your model and the last step you completed. Then choose the exact light you see.
Electrical safety: water under the base, a wet cord or plug, a burning smell or unusual heat means stop operation and seek manufacturer support. Do not handle a wet live plug. Do not open the housing, dismantle the machine or pump water by hand.
Start the fresh-water rinse on Next or Pop
You selected a completed first descaling phase, a fresh-water rinse that has not started, and the matching rapid orange light. Start the rinse with fresh drinking water only.
What to do
- Empty and thoroughly rinse the water tank and the drip tray of descaling solution before refilling with fresh water.
- Refill the water tank with fresh drinking water and put it back on the machine.
- Empty the receiving container under the coffee outlet and put it back. It needs to hold at least 1 litre.
- Keep the head closed and locked, and leave the capsule slot empty.
- Press the coffee button once to start the fresh-water rinse.
Stop and check
- Stop if the button does not start a rinse, the light differs from the model instructions, or water appears under the machine.
- This step applies only after an actual completed descaling phase.
Completion or stop signal: The rinse stops automatically and the button becomes steady. Then let the machine dry for 10 minutes before use.
Start the fresh-water rinse on VertuoPlus
On VertuoPlus the pause between descaling phases is orange once every 2 seconds. Use a full tank of fresh drinking water for the documented fresh-water rinse.
What to do

- Do not press buttons to stop the rinse and do not unplug the machine.

Confirm that the Plus light is steady green
You selected a completed Plus fresh-water rinse and a steady white or green light. The Plus ready state must be steady green; white on its own does not confirm it.
What to do
- Look at the button again in normal light.
- If it is steady green, the documented Plus routine is complete; wait 10 minutes before use.
- If it is white, not clearly green, or changing, record the exact colour and contact Nespresso support.
Stop and check
- Do not treat a white light as ready when you expected green.
- Do not repeat the exit combination hoping the colour changes.
Completion or stop signal: Steady green confirms the Plus ready state. Any other colour remains unconfirmed and needs support.
Use the Plus exit only after the rinse has stopped
The Plus fresh-water rinse has stopped automatically and the light is orange once every 2 seconds. That is the documented point for the Plus exit step.
What to do
- Confirm the rinse has stopped by itself and no water is still running.
- Press the coffee button and the lever down together for 3 seconds.
- Check that the light becomes steady green.
Stop and check
- If the light does not become green, stop repeating the combination and contact support with your record.
- Do not use this step for a Next or Pop machine, for an unfinished rinse, or when the stage is unknown.

This is the Plus descale alert, not the active orange descaling mode. Confirm the current procedure and stage in the Plus instructions before pressing anything.

- Do not use a generic reset and do not skip the fresh-water rinse.
- Check the Plus source for the descale alert and the stage it belongs to.
- If you have completed the documented fresh-water rinse and the alert remains, record it and contact Nespresso support.
Stop and check
- Do not run another descale just to clear the alert.
- If the alert persists after the documented routine, stop and use support.
Completion or stop signal: The alert clears only through the documented Plus procedure or after manufacturer support has assessed the machine.
Power was lost during an active Next or Pop descale
The manufacturer guidance says both the descaling and the fresh-water rinse phases repeat when the machine restarts after power was lost during an active descale. This applies to the interrupted active cycle.
What to do
- Record which phase was running when power was lost.
- Restart and follow the model's full descaling procedure from the beginning, including the fresh-water rinse.
- Do not add extra descaler to a rinse you already completed; the repeat instruction is for the interrupted active cycle.

- If the machine does not enter the documented descaling mode, stop and use the model manual or support.
- Do not reuse another model's button sequence.
Completion or stop signal: Follow the completion signal in the model instructions. If the light does not match that signal, stop and contact support.
VertuoPlus: use the Plus procedure after an interruption
Power was lost during an active VertuoPlus cycle, or the Plus stage is unclear. Do not reuse Next or Pop commands; establish the Plus phase from the model source or support.
What to do
- Record which phase was running when power was lost.
- Open the Plus assistance page or manual for the documented descaling and rinse sequence.
- Contact Nespresso support if the current phase cannot be established from the Plus source.

What to do
- If a rinse is running, let it finish. Then wait until the machine has stopped and cooled before reading the model label; do not tip a hot machine to look underneath.

The Next and Pop rows describe completion of their documented procedure, not a command to restart it. The Plus exit step is for a completed Plus routine; it is not a universal reset or a replacement for rinsing.

Reconstruct the interrupted step
Write down which phase used descaler, when you replaced it with drinking water, whether the pump stopped automatically, and whether power was lost. Do not add fresh descaler merely because an orange light remains. If a Next lost power during an active descale, its manual says both phases must be repeated on restart; that specific instruction is different from repeating a completed routine because the light looks unfamiliar.
