Nespresso Blinking Orange After Descaling: Reset Checklist
The machine is usually not broken. It is still sitting in descaling mode. Here is the order to check things in, and the point where you should stop and open the manual.
Written for Nespresso home machines generally. Light colors and blink patterns are not identical across every model family, so treat this page as a triage order and use your own machine's manual as the per-model authority.

An orange light that is still blinking after descaling usually means the machine never left descaling mode. The descale cycle was started, but the closing steps were not finished — a full fresh-water rinse, followed by the machine's own exit step. The light clears when that closing sequence completes, not when the descaling solution runs out.
Two things to do before anything else:
- Do not unplug the machine, and do not open the brewing head or lift the lever while the light is blinking. Cutting power or breaking the cycle partway is the most common reason the light stays on.
- Do not brew a cup yet. Until the rinse is finished, the water inside the machine may still hold descaling solution. Descaler is not meant to be consumed.

Blink patterns and color meanings differ between Nespresso model families and firmware versions. Rows 1 to 7 describe states that resolve with the rinse-and-exit sequence. Row 8 does not.
The reset sequence, in order
Work top to bottom. Each step assumes the previous one produced the expected result.
- Leave the machine powered and let it settle.Do not unplug it to "reset" it. Power loss during descaling mode is what strands the machine in the state you are trying to clear. If the machine is hot from a recent cycle, let it rest before starting again.
- Confirm the current mode against your manual.Open the light chart for your model and identify which pattern you are looking at. Ten seconds here prevents running a rinse cycle the machine is not asking for.
- Empty the water tank completely and rinse it out.Pour away anything left in the tank and rinse the tank with fresh water so no descaling solution carries over into the rinse.
- Refill with fresh, cool water to the maximum mark.Use cool water unless your manual states otherwise. Fill to the maximum mark so the rinse has a full tank to work with. Place a container under the outlet that can hold at least the tank's volume.
- Start the rinse exactly as the manual describes.The rinse is normally the same cycle path you used for descaling, run with fresh water and no descaler. Start it the way your manual documents for your model.
- Let the full tank run through without interrupting it.Do not open the brewing head, lift the lever, move the tank, or unplug the machine until the flow stops on its own. An interrupted rinse is the most common reason the light is still blinking afterwards.
- Perform the machine's exit step for descaling mode.Your manual documents how the machine leaves descaling mode — it may be automatic at the end of the rinse, or it may need a specific action from you. Do this step before judging whether the light cleared.
- Flush once more, then test.Run one more tank of fresh water through, pour that water away, and then brew a cup and discard it before brewing a cup you intend to drink. If the orange light is still blinking after this, repeat the rinse once more, then stop and follow "When to stop".

Common mistakes
These are the reasons the light is still blinking after a descale that felt finished.
Unplugging the machine, or losing power, while it is in descaling mode leaves it mid-sequence. The light is telling you the sequence is unfinished, not that the machine has failed.
One partial pass is often not enough for the machine to register the rinse as complete. Run full tanks, start to finish.
On machines that need an explicit action to leave descaling mode, the rinse alone does not clear the light. Check the manual for that step before concluding the reset failed.
Most manuals specify fresh, cool water for the rinse. Use cool water unless your own manual says otherwise.
Use only descaler intended for your machine. Stronger acids and improvised substitutes are outside what the manufacturer documents and can attack internal parts.
Brewing while the machine is still in descaling mode risks pulling residual solution into your cup. Finish the rinse and exit the mode first.
Edge cases
Situations where the standard sequence needs an adjustment.
The machine was unplugged mid-cycle. Treat the cycle as never completed. Restart the descaling sequence from the beginning, then run the full rinse and exit steps. Do not simply resume the rinse and assume the descale stage finished.
Descaling solution sat inside the machine for a long time. Run a full fresh-water rinse before anything else, then run the descaling sequence again from the start. Solution left standing is a reason to redo the cycle rather than extend it.
Heavily scaled machine on its first descale. One descale cycle may not clear all the scale. If the light returns shortly after a completed reset, run the full descaling sequence again, and check the water hardness setting your manual describes for your water supply.

The tank or its sensor is the problem. If the machine behaves as though the tank is empty when it is full, reseat it and check that the tank and its base are clean and dry. Persistent false empty readings are a hardware question, not a descaling question.
When to stop
Stop and unplug the machine, and do not keep cycling it, if you see any of the following:
- Water leaking from the machine rather than from the outlet.
- An unusual noise, a burning smell, or visible damage to the cord, plug, or housing.
- The orange light blinking alongside a pattern your manual does not document.
- No water flow at all after a correctly seated, full tank.
- The light unchanged after several complete rinse-and-exit attempts.
Electrical safety, in short: keep the cord, plug, and the machine's base dry, never immerse the machine, and unplug it before cleaning the exterior or moving it. Descaling solution and rinse water are not food — never drink them, and discard every rinse.
