Start with your pot, not its metal
A moka pot is dishwasher safe when the instructions for that exact model and market say it is. "Stainless steel" names a material, not a care approval: the Venus is stainless steel, and its current New Zealand listing still rules out the dishwasher. Published instructions may differ; match the exact model and the paperwork supplied with it, and ask the maker if the current page conflicts. What settles the question is the sheet that came with your pot and the maker's page for that exact model.

What Bialetti's current pages say about the Moka Express and Venus
The New Zealand listing for the Moka Express Black describes a pot made of food-grade aluminium, then states in its notes before first use that "The Bialetti Moka Express Black is NOT dishwasher safe." Its brewing steps end by asking you to "dissemble and hand wash in warm water," and to clean the inside of the column in the top chamber periodically so coffee residue does not build up.
The Venus page from the same store describes an 18/10 stainless-steel pot, then repeats the sentence with the other model name: "The Bialetti Venus is NOT dishwasher safe." Its steps end the same way, with hand washing in warm water.
Bialetti's Philippine Venus listing is more explicit about why. It says the pot should only be rinsed with clean water, with no detergents, and that a dishwasher will leave it "irremediably" damaged and change the taste of the coffee.
So the two models with current pages, one aluminium and one stainless steel, come out the same way.
The Venus leaflet that says a dishwasher is allowed
The instruction sheet hosted here is wrapped as the manual for a 2-cup (85 ml) Bialetti Nuova Venus in stainless steel, and page 2 carries a 16/03/2020 print stamp. Its English cleaning section says the pot "can be put in the dishwasher", then advises washing by hand without detergent so the coffee's flavour is not altered. The same page asks for the pot to be stored completely dry and not closed, and warns that knocking the funnel to empty it can deform it and spoil the seal.
That is a real Bialetti document, not a forum paraphrase, and it conflicts with what the maker's current regional pages publish for the same model name. Nothing in the material explains why. A different market edition, a policy change after 2020, or instructions specific to the 2-cup size are all possible, and none of them is confirmed. The same uncertainty applies to whether that permission covers a Venus sold in the United States today, and to which leaflet came in the box with any particular pot: the file identifies the model its wrapper names, not the pot the reader owns. It is also not evidence that Bialetti redesigned the Venus.
Read the document for what it is. A Venus may be cleared for the dishwasher in one version of its paperwork while the current published pages say no. If your own leaflet allows it, you are not misreading it — you are holding a sheet with a different scope. For the aluminium Moka Express, nothing here offers the same permission.
How to hand-wash a moka pot
This routine works for either metal and follows the cleaning sections of the pages and the leaflet read above. It is also what to do while the dishwasher question is still open.
- Wait until the pot is completely cool. The leaflet puts cleaning after cooling for a reason: opening a hot chamber risks a burn.
- Open it by hand on the two chambers rather than levering the handle. Bialetti's pages warn that using the handle as a lever can break it.
- Take apart only what your model's instructions tell you to. On the Venus leaflet the removable parts are the funnel, the filter plate and the gasket; other pots are not necessarily laid out the same way, so follow your own sheet rather than a generic parts list.
- Rinse and wipe with warm water and a soft cloth or sponge. Leave out scouring pads and abrasive powders, and skip detergent if you are following the leaflet or the Philippine listing, which ask for a detergent-free wash.
- Check the holes in the filter plate and clear any that are blocked. The leaflet suggests a brush with soft bristles or the tip of a needle.
- Dry every part fully, then store the pot unassembled and open, as the leaflet asks. Do not knock the funnel against the sink to empty it; the leaflet says that can dent or ovalise it and spoil the seal.

If your pot has already been through the dishwasher
Nothing in the manufacturer's material tells owners to restore a dishwasher-damaged pot with acid, metal polish or a home treatment, so don't. The maker treats a machine wash as a way to damage the pot and alter the coffee's taste; an improvised mix adds a second problem to a pot you already have questions about.
If the finish has changed, the coffee tastes different, or a part no longer fits as it did, stop using the pot and ask Bialetti about that exact model. Send the model name, the size, the market where it was bought and photographs of the pot and the affected area, so the answer applies to your version rather than to the model family in general.
When the instructions disagree, do this
- Identify the model, the size and the market of sale from the pot, the box or the receipt. Venus and Moka Express each come in several sizes and the sheets are versioned, so the size printed on your sheet matters as much as the name.
- Compare the sheet supplied with the pot and the maker’s current page for the same model, size and market. If they conflict, keep both references and ask the maker which applies. Use the shared hand-washing guidance while the discrepancy remains unresolved.
- Until you have the answer, wash by hand in warm water once the pot is cool, then store it dry and open. That routine satisfies both versions of the guidance.
Sputtering, weak flow and a pot that will not seal are a different problem. Our guide to why a moka pot sputters covers those symptoms and when to take the pot off the heat before checking it.
If the sheet is missing and the model cannot be identified, ask Bialetti for the cleaning instructions for that exact pot, and keep it out of the dishwasher until the answer arrives.
