Breville Barista Express Grinder Not Working: Diagnose by Symptom

Diagnose a Breville Barista Express BES870/BES870XL grinder by symptom: flashing filter-size lights, motor running without grounds, a loud jam, or no response.

Match the symptom before you remove anything

The BES870 and BES870XL built-in grinder has no separate display. Everything it wants to tell you arrives through the FILTER SIZE LEDs, the sound of the motor and the grounds that do or do not land in the basket. That makes symptom-first diagnosis faster than disassembly.

What you see or hear

Most likely cause

First action

FILTER SIZE LEDs flash

Bean hopper is not attached or locked correctly

Unplug, remove the hopper, clear the locking area, re-lock the hopper

Motor runs but no grounds come out

Empty hopper, blocked chamber or chute, or moisture in the chamber

Check for beans, then clean the burrs and chute and dry them fully

Loud noise or a jam mid-dose

Blockage or foreign object in the grinder

Stop grinding, unplug, and inspect for debris before you restart

No response at all

Power, hopper interlock, or a safety thermal cut-out

Confirm the machine powers on, re-seat the hopper, then follow the manual's cool-down advice if overheating is suspected

Breville lists all four of these causes in the troubleshooting table of the BES870 instruction book (page 34), and every check below follows that book for this model rather than generic espresso advice.

Unplug before you clean, and keep the burrs dry

Two safety habits prevent most of the damage owners cause while troubleshooting:

  • Switch the machine off and unplug it before you remove the hopper, clean the grinder or disassemble anything. The manual's safety instructions call for exactly that before cleaning, moving or disassembling the appliance.
  • Keep water out of the grind path. Moisture in the grinder chamber and chute is one of Breville's documented causes of “no ground coffee coming from grinder”, so brush components dry and make sure the burrs are thoroughly dry before reassembly.

Never force a jam. Do not lever the burrs, run the grinder repeatedly against a blockage, or bypass any interlock to make the motor turn. The burrs are sharp enough that the manual carries an explicit warning about handling them, and forcing a stalled grinder risks damage that turns a cleaning job into a repair.

Flashing FILTER SIZE LEDs: the hopper is not locked

If the SINGLE and DOUBLE FILTER SIZE LEDs flash, the machine is telling you the bean hopper is not attached correctly. This is an interlock, not a motor fault: the grinder will not run safely while the hopper is not locked, so the warning should be your first check, not your last.

  1. Press POWER to switch off, then unplug the machine.
  2. Unlock and lift off the bean hopper.
  3. Look for debris — packed grounds, a stray bean or a damaged locking tab — around the hopper base and the locking area. Clear it without putting your fingers near the burrs.
  4. Seat the hopper fully and turn it completely to LOCK.
  5. Plug back in, switch on and check the panel once. A steady SINGLE or DOUBLE light is normal: it shows which basket size you selected.

If the LEDs keep flashing with an undamaged hopper that sits fully down and locks, stop. Do not wedge the mechanism or defeat the switch. Order a replacement hopper only if the locking tabs, collar or body are physically broken; a new hopper will not repair an internal interlock fault, which is a job for Breville support or a qualified technician.

Motor runs but no grounds come out

The grinder sounds normal, the dose cycle runs, but the basket stays empty or barely dusted. Under “No ground coffee coming from grinder” (page 34), Breville groups three causes:

  • An empty or nearly empty hopper. It sounds obvious, but check the beans before you take anything apart.
  • A blocked grinder chamber or chute. Coffee oils and fines pack the path between the burrs and the outlet, especially with dark, oily roasts.
  • Water or moisture in the grinder chamber and chute. Damp grounds cake together and stop the flow.

Work through it in that order:

  1. Confirm there are beans in the hopper. If the grinder turns normally and is not jammed, Breville's routine cleaning sequence (page 25) starts by emptying the hopper, re-locking it and running the grinder empty. Do not run it against a loud jam.
  2. Switch off and unplug before removing the hopper or burrs. Continue the manual's routine sequence: remove the upper burr and brush both burrs and the chute with the supplied brush.
  3. Dry everything. If the chamber feels damp, follow the manual's advice to dry it thoroughly — it notes that a hair dryer can be used to blow air into the grinder chamber — and never reassemble with wet burrs.
  4. Reassemble, lock the hopper and dose once to confirm grounds reach the basket.

If grounds still do not come out after a clean, dry reassembly, the blockage sits between the burrs and the grinder outlet. That is the manual's advanced cleaning situation (page 26), which involves removing the lower burr and grind fan with a 10 mm socket and long-nose pliers to clear the exit chute. Do not improvise that sequence: follow the BES870 book step by step, including its reassembly order and its note to set grind size back to 5.

Loud noise or a jam: stop, clear, do not force

A Breville Barista Express grinder making loud noise is usually reporting a blockage or a foreign object rather than wearing out. Breville's troubleshooting table names both causes directly and points to the same fix: remove the hopper, check for debris or a blockage, and clean the chamber and chute if needed.

When the noise starts:

  1. Stop the grind immediately. Do not run the grinder again to “clear it” — that is how a small obstruction damages burrs.
  2. Unplug the machine.
  3. Remove the hopper and check for a stone, a piece of packaging, a broken bean or a metal fragment around the top burr.
  4. If the path looks clear but the grinder still jams or howls, do the routine brush cleaning first and move to the manual's advanced cleaning only if the blockage is confirmed between the burrs and the outlet.

If the machine continues to hum, click, stall or make a new loud noise after the burrs and chute are clean, stop troubleshooting and contact Breville support. A motor that keeps tripping a heat cut-out is a signal that something internal needs service.

No response at all

A silent grinder is a different problem from a noisy one. First confirm the machine is powered and the grinding cradle switch is actually being pressed, then check these two documented possibilities.

  • The hopper interlock is open. If the hopper is not correctly locked, the grinder will not run and the FILTER SIZE LEDs flash. Re-seat and lock the hopper first.
  • The safety thermal cut-out has tripped. Breville explains that a machine which is on but ceases to operate may have overheated pump or grinder components. Switch off, unplug, and allow 30–60 minutes to cool. If the problem returns or persists, the manual's instruction is to call Breville Consumer Support.

Also confirm that you are actually activating the grinder: on this model you push and release the portafilter in the grinding cradle to engage the activation switch. A portafilter that is not pushed home will not start the dose even though the machine is ready.

Do not open the housing, bypass a safety switch or test the motor with the machine partly disassembled. An internal or electrical fault on a BES870 is a support or repair job, and Breville's product hub for the Barista Express is the place to confirm your exact version before you contact Breville.

The completion check: what “fixed” looks like

The repair is done when one normal dose passes all four checks:

  1. No FILTER SIZE LED is flashing and the panel shows your selected basket size.
  2. The grinder runs at its usual sound level, with no hum, click or howl beyond the normal motor.
  3. Fresh grounds land in the dry filter basket at the selected filter size.
  4. A second dose behaves the same way, so the result is repeatable.

Once the grinder passes all four checks, treat any remaining problem as an extraction issue rather than a grinder fault.

If the shots are still off after the grinder works

A Breville Barista Express grinder not working after cleaning, or a grinder that now dispenses but still produces poor espresso, is usually two separate problems layered on top of each other. CoffeeBrewsHub keeps the extraction side separate from grinder repair, and its checklists are the right next step: Breville Barista Express low pressure after cleaning walks through the pump-versus-puck checks, and Breville coffee puck too wet covers dose, basket choice and shot timing. Both are about the espresso in the cup, not about whether the burrs turn.

Fix the grinder first, then change one extraction variable at a time. If grounds now dispense reliably, the grinder has done its job.
