Nespresso Vertuo Coffee Grounds in the Cup: Match the Cleaning to Your Model

Coffee grounds in a Nespresso Vertuo cup: run your model’s official cleaning, use a fresh undamaged capsule, and know when Plus needs cleaning twice.

Start with cleaning and a fresh capsule

Identify the machine family on the unit or box—original Vertuo, Vertuo Plus, Vertuo Pop+, or another Vertuo line—then open that model’s current Nespresso machine-assistance Cleaning section or the manual that shipped with your unit. Prefer that document over a generic web summary when the two disagree. For a general walkthrough first, see how to clean a Nespresso Vertuo, then return to the document for your exact model.

Before the next brew:

  1. Eject any used capsule and confirm the next capsule is fresh, undamaged, and Vertuo-compatible.
  2. Empty and rinse the used-capsule container and drip area as your manual describes.
  3. Run the cleaning/rinsing procedure your model document specifies—not a button sequence copied from a different Vertuo.
  4. Brew one test cup with a new capsule and check whether grounds reappear.

Do not treat every speck as proof that seals have failed. Do not open the enclosure, force a stuck capsule, or poke the brewing head with utensils.

Match cleaning to the model and source

Cleaning instructions are tied to the model and to the document. These are the two current English manuals cited in this guide:

Model

Cleaning source to use

What that source says for grounds in the cup

Vertuo Plus

Vertuo Plus user manual — grounds-in-the-cup troubleshooting; then follow Cleaning

Perform the cleaning procedure twice when coffee grounds appear in the cup

Vertuo Pop+

Vertuo Pop+ user manual — grounds-in-the-cup troubleshooting; then follow Cleaning

Perform the cleaning procedure twice when coffee grounds appear in the cup; this applies to the Pop+ document only, so do not assume other Pop variants match

Other Vertuo models

Machine-assistance Cleaning page or the manual supplied with your unit

Follow that source only; do not reuse Plus or Pop+ steps

Those two “twice” instructions belong to the two documents cited and to grounds in the cup. They are a count from each source, not a universal button sequence for every Vertuo. Assistance entry points for the rest of the line are published under Nespresso US machine assistance. If a web summary is shorter than the manual in hand, follow the manual for your serial and model.

Each manual also separates Cleaning from Descaling: use the Cleaning section for coffee residue, and the Descaling section only when your model’s indicators or manual call for it.

Cleaning is not descaling

Cleaning/rinsing flushes coffee residue through the brew path. Descaling addresses mineral scale with the maker’s descaling process and solution. For grounds in the cup alone:

  • Run the model’s cleaning/rinsing steps with fresh water in a rinsed tank.
  • Do not pour vinegar, household soap, or descaler into the tank solely to chase grounds.
  • Only descale when your model’s indicators and descaling section call for it.

After cleaning, dry visible moisture in the head area only as your manual allows, with a soft cloth—never immerse the machine.

Safety while you handle the machine

Hot water and a hot brew head are normal after a cycle. Wait until the machine has stopped and cooled enough to handle per the safety leaflet and manual. Keep fingers and tools away from the sharp brewing head. Do not force the lever against a jammed capsule or pry open sealed parts. If a capsule will not eject normally, stop and follow the stuck-capsule guidance for your model rather than using DIY force.

When to stop and contact Nespresso

Contact Nespresso (or the seller’s support path) and skip home disassembly if any of the following persists after the prescribed cleaning for your model:

  • Large coffee fragments or grounds that return on the next fresh capsule
  • Torn or damaged capsules even when you start with intact stock
  • Leakage, unusual noise, or abnormal flow that cleaning does not clear
  • Grounds that survive the full cleaning guidance your document gives, including the second cleaning pass your manual may require

Replacement parts and service decisions belong with the manufacturer once those red flags appear.

Record what you tried

Use a blank log so you do not rely on memory or invented counts:

Field

Entry

Machine model / serial or assistance page used

Capsule type (Vertuo-compatible) and condition

Source used (manual revision or assistance page)

Cleaning cycles completed (per that source)

Outcome on next fresh capsule

Fill only what you observe. Leave cells blank rather than guessing button counts from another model.

Limits of this guide

This page does not claim that grounds are always harmless, that a gasket has failed, or that Original-line cup-size FAQs from other markets apply to Vertuo pods. Cup-size programming and part numbers are separate jobs; for residue, start with the Cleaning section of the document for your model.
